LAST ORDERS PLEASE!

Yes – we regret to announce that we will cease trading on 31st August 2011. Falling sales, ever rising postage costs and the general economic climate have taken their toll.

We would like to thank all our loyal customers, past and present, for helping us to survive for more than 30 years.

We may continue trading in a more modest way, perhaps on eBay or Delcampe. If you would like to be kept informed of this, please let us know.

If you wish to place any last-minute orders please do so as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Please note, however, that orders placed between 20th and 28th August will only be despatched after that date.

Terms and Conditions

General

All prices quoted are in British pounds sterling (£) - see currency page for more details.
All prices quoted exclude postage and packing charges. These will be added as explained on our postage and packing information page (see under help above). Our website automatically calculates and adds postage and packing to your order for all parts of the world.
Credit and debit cards will not be charged until the day of despatch of your order.
These terms and conditions do not affect our customers' statutory rights.

VAT (Value Added Tax)

Value Added Tax is the local sales tax.
All prices quoted include VAT at the rate applicable in the United Kingdom (currently 20.0 %).
VAT is charged where applicable on all goods despatched to addresses in the UK and the rest of the European Union.
On orders for despatch to destinations outside the European Union where the value of goods would be over £30.00, the VAT will be deducted. Under this amount, the VAT will be retained in lieu of a small order surcharge to cover handling costs.

Payment

Payment by credit card (VISA, American Express or Mastercard) and UK customers using MAESTRO (was SWITCH) can be accepted over the internet and is the simplest way to pay for your order. Please complete the form on our Secure Server (which you will find once you have gone to the checkout). Alternatively, you may send your credit card details by fax or phone them through - there are more instructions about how to do this at the end of the checkout process.

If you do not wish to pay by credit or debit card, we can also accept payment from UK customers by cheque and we can accept payment by Bank Draft, International Money Order in pounds sterling or cash in pounds sterling or Euros only. (If you wish to pay in Euros, please submit your order and indicate in the special instructions box that you need a precise quotation in Euros so you will know how much to send.)

In these cases, please print the final page in the checkout process (headed Thank You) and enclose a copy of this with your payment. Please wait for confirmation from us that all the items you have ordered are available in the quantities you require. You will immediately receive an automatically generated e-mail which confirms the details we have received from you - this does NOT confirm that everything is available. You will then receive another e-mail from us as soon as we have checked stock availability. As a general rule, we try not to have items which are currently out of stock listed on the site, so usually if it's on the site there should be at least 1 available; however, if you are ordering more than 1 of any item, it is possible that we may not be able to supply the quantity you ask for.

Complaints Procedure

If you wish to contact us concerning any problems you have experienced with any aspect of our service or using our website then use any of the contact methods (mail, FAX, Telephone or e-mail) shown on our our contacts page (return to the homepage and look in the menu on the left hand side to find this).

Complaints will be acknowledged as soon as possible and dealt with as a matter of priority. (We are a small organisation, and if Mr Somerville and/or the web manager is away from the office on business or otherwise, e-mails and other messages may not get immediate attention. Notice of absence of more than a couple of days will usually be posted on our homepage.)

Many of our customers may not be aware that the stock range we currently offer has been built up over more than 25 years. More importantly, much of that stock range is not offered by other dealers and much of it is irreplaceable. In other words we often carry the last stock available anywhere of particular items.

This is increasingly the case with many of the standard regional packs, mainly as a result of numerous acquisitions and takeovers which have occurred in the industry in recent years. For example, whereas only a few years ago there were as many as five major independent producers in Germany, today there is only one, namely Nürnberger-Spielkarten-Verlag GmbH. Carta Mundi of Belgium has acquired all the others (A.S.S, Berliner Spielkarten, F.X. Schmid & Spielkartenfabrik Altenburg). Inevitably, this has led to a radical rationalisation of what was previously a great diversity of patterns offered. Some patterns have disappeared entirely, e.g. Prussian, and others are in danger of going the same way, notably the Saxon pattern.

The manufacturers are dictating what they want you, the customer, to buy and are not interested in offering a choice any more. Thus for the game of Skat, for instance, in future you will only be able to buy a North German (or Berliner) pattern pack if you play with French suits or a New Altenburg pattern pack if you play with German suits. For Tarock or Schafkopf both Bavarian and Franconian pattern packs are still on offer but perhaps the Franconian pattern will be the next to be eliminated. For Gaigel and Binokel there is just the Württemberg pattern.

All in all, the diverse range we are currently able to offer can only diminish as time goes on. You have been warned!
Standard Regional Pattern packs can be found in the catalogue section called "Regional", and beware if searching by country of publication as there are many publishers who produce packs for regions other than their own!
