	English pattern - Scottish Flag (RS)  by Richard Edward Ltd for R. Somerville Cat Ref: 13332	'The Saltire' is Scotland's national flag. St. Andrew was one of the twelve Apostles. He considered himself unworthy to be crucified on the same style of cross as Jesus so a diagonal cross was made for him. Some of St. Andrew's relics were brought to Fife and he was first venerated by the Picts then adopted by the Scots as the patron saint of Scotland. Around AD 815 the Scots were in battle with the Saxons under King Athelstan when white clouds formed into the St. Andrew's cross in the blue sky. Heartened by this sign the Scots went on to victory and thereafter the white cross upon a blue field became the Scottish national flag.
